Coca-Cola FEMSA Brasil is operating its fleet of Volkswagen electric trucks to distribute beverages in the metropolitan region of São Paulo. There are 31 e-Delivery vehicles aimed at serving the distribution centers in Jurubatuba, Osasco and Ipiranga. In addition to the low environmental impact, with zero pollutant emissions, other expected benefits are the reduction of noise in the city, the reduction in the generation of other waste – it is not necessary to change water and oil, for example –, the economy per kilometer driven and the low maintenance cost. The operation with the new models is also an important advance in the company’s ESG agenda.
Ian Craig, CEO of Coca-Cola FEMSA Brazil, says:
“We are always looking for innovative solutions to meet society’s expectations regarding environmental issues. We have innovation in our DNA and this characteristic has motivated us to have an electric fleet operating in Greater São Paulo, the result of continuous investment in sustainable operations and solutions that contribute to the reduction of pollutant emissions throughout the chain.”
Roberto Cortes, president and CEO of Volkswagen Caminhões e Ônibus, says:
“We have taken on this mission to transform the transport industry and electric mobility is among the solutions we believe in. Increasingly, companies like Coca-Cola FEMSA Brasil will accelerate on this journey with us. This second batch closed, even before the start of operation with the vehicles, proves that we have great partners by our side.”
Compared to diesel trucks, electric trucks can reduce carbon emissions and benefit the environment. With an average autonomy of 110 kilometers, the vehicles are recharged at night in the distribution centers, where civil works and installation modifications were carried out.
Camila Amaral, VP Legal and Corporate Affairs at Coca-Cola FEMSA, highlights:
“Sustainability is at the heart of Coca-Cola FEMSA Brasil’s actions. The investment in electric trucks is part of a broad strategy that, among other solutions, seeks to mitigate impacts on the environment, generating a significant reduction in the emission of pollutants.”
State-of-the-art technology is one of the added advantages. All vehicles are connected with performance data in the cloud and with the RIO e-Fleet package for fleet management, which enables real-time monitoring of vehicle and driver performance, ensuring safety in transport.
One of the great assets is the engine regeneration system, which has around 100 sensors and new electronic controls that use brake friction and speed reduction as an energy source to give extra charge to the batteries, capable of recovering 40% during braking to make the vehicle more efficient.
With meticulous calibration for severe operations, the engine also delivers 300 KW and 2,150 Nm (nanometers) torque from the first rotations. The pneumatic suspension allows suspending one of the axles to generate even more economy in the operation.
Ricardo Alouche, Vice President of Sales, Marketing and Services at Volkswagen Caminhões e Ônibus, comments:
“That is our commitment: to offer complete and high-tech solutions to support our customers in their journey to a more efficient and sustainable operation. We are taking our Volkswagen electric truck to other countries and we are going to make further progress in this strategy.”
